Five Evils refers to five animals traditionally perceived as “poisonous” in ancient Chinese culture, often including snakes, scorpions, toads, centipedes, and spiders. This design draws inspiration from Ku Shulan’s iconic paper-cutting artwork of the same name, reimagining the frog and the snake as central symbols. The frog, representing fertility, transformation, and renewal in Chinese culture, contrasts with the snake, a symbol of power and resilience. Together, they pay homage to the artist Ku Shulan’s legacy and the rich symbolism of her work.
This design seeks to breathe new life into the static art of paper-cutting by incorporating interactive elements. Through clickable color variations and automatic movements mapped to the user’s mouse interactions, the artwork aims to digitally disseminate the stories of rural women and the art of paper-cutting, ensuring their voices are remembered.
