Dumplings is a hand-drawn animation that tells the story of a girl struggling with an eating disorder, who dares not join her family in eating dumplings during the Spring Festival—the most important and celebratory time of the year. The film explores her mental and emotional journey, unfolding in a stream-of-consciousness narrative.




The audio is a collage of real Spring Festival sounds, including the iconic opening theme of the Spring Festival Gala, the crackling of fireworks, and my own voiceover. These elements ground the story in the cultural and emotional weight of the festival, contrasting with the girl’s inner turmoil.

The visual language of the animation mirrors her fragmented psyche: shaky, discontinuous frames simulate her unclear thoughts and the blackouts she experiences from cycles of binge eating and extreme dieting. The juxtaposition of small dumplings against her swollen belly highlights her physical and emotional struggle. In the end, the girl retreats into a primal, almost virgin state—hovering between life and death, vulnerability and resilience.
